Manual Machinist

Salary: £34,980–£41,040 per year, depending on experience

We’re recruiting an experienced Machinist for a Croydon workshop that repairs and overhauls mechanical equipment used across the rail, marine, power, oil and gas industries. This is a varied role focused on one-off repairs, remanufacturing and tooling rather than production runs.

The Role

  • Set up and operate manual lathes, milling, drilling, boring and grinding machines.
  • Interpret metric and imperial engineering drawings to plan machining work.
  • Repair or remanufacture components to precise tolerances, checking your work with measuring tools.
  • Make and modify tooling to support workshop repairs and rebuilds.
  • Support overhaul teams with practical machining solutions and carry out basic machine checks.
  • Carry out component balancing work; training can be provided if you have no balancing experience.

About You

  • Significant experience setting up and using manual machining equipment in an engineering environment.
  • Able to read engineering drawings and work accurately to specified tolerances.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a practical approach to solving problems.
  • Able to work independently and communicate well with other workshop teams.
  • An apprenticeship, time-served background or relevant qualification would be welcome.

The workshop supports regulated industries, so compliance with its drug and alcohol testing programme is required.
