Senior Mechanical Engineer

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis. This site-based role provides technical leadership and oversight, sitting between the Head of Engineering and the Engineering team. The successful candidate will bring extensive engineering expertise to ensure high-quality, cost-effective, and timely delivery of engineered products and services.

Benefits & Package:

  • Salary: £60k – £70k (dependent on experience)

  • Hours: Monday – Thursday (8:30am – 4:30pm), Friday (8:30am – 3:30pm) – 36.5 hours per week

  • Bonus: Annual bonus (pro-rata on year of joining)

  • Holiday: 25 days annual leave (pro-rata on joining)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day workload and activities of the engineering team.

  • Provide mechanical engineering expertise in component and system failure analysis.

  • Oversee condition assessments, warranty investigations, method statements, overhaul instructions, and test procedures.

  • Review and approve engineering outputs, ensuring accuracy and adherence to industry standards.

  • Support the Head of Engineering in maintaining and enhancing engineering standards.

  • Mentor junior engineers and workshop fitters, fostering professional development.

  • Assist in supplier selection and assessment in collaboration with purchasing and quality teams.

  • Improve and implement engineering processes in safety-critical environments.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant British, ISO, and RISAS standards.

  • Act as a deputy for the Head of Engineering when required.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • HNC/HND (or equivalent) in a mechanically biased engineering discipline.

  • Minimum of 15 years of professional engineering experience, including 5 years managing an engineering team.

  • Strong knowledge of industries such as heavy engineering, rail, marine, power generation, and oil & gas.

  • Familiarity with mechanical driveline and connecting products, including high-speed gearboxes, cardan shafts, and couplings (advantageous but not essential).

  • Proficiency in CAD software such as Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, and Team Centre.

  • Strong understanding of BS 8888 technical documentation and specifications.

  • Hands-on, adaptable approach to engineering challenges.

  • Commercial awareness and understanding of the impact of engineering decisions on business operations.

  • Knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 quality systems.

  • Excellent technical communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a passion for mechanical engineering.
