An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Service Operations Manager to lead and develop service activities across the Rail & Marine sectors.
This is a senior operational and technical leadership role suited to someone with a strong background in engineering service, maintenance and field operations. The successful candidate can be based anywhere in the UK and will be responsible for ensuring the efficient delivery of service activities, leading technical teams, maintaining excellent customer relationships and supporting the continued growth of the service operation.

The Role
As Service Operations Manager, you will take responsibility for planning, scheduling and coordinating service activities including maintenance, repairs, overhauls and commissioning of drive and propulsion systems, auxiliary equipment and associated Rail & Marine technologies.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Planning and coordinating service, maintenance, overhaul, repair and commissioning activities
- Allocating service engineers and technical resources effectively to meet customer requirements and contractual commitments
- Leading, mentoring and developing a team of service engineers and technicians
- Monitoring operational costs and profitability
- Developing and implementing service procedures, workflows and quality standards
- Managing the availability and utilisation of spare parts, tools and service equipment
- Ensuring service activities comply with company policies, industry standards and HSE requirements
- Promoting a strong health and safety culture across the service operation
- Acting as a key point of contact for customers and maintaining strong long-term relationships
- Providing technical support and solutions to customers
- Resolving complex service and technical issues
- Preparing and presenting service proposals, reports and recommendations
- Identifying opportunities for contract renewals, upgrades and additional service offerings
- Supporting customer visits and management reporting
- Maintaining service KPIs and ensuring best practice across the operation
Technical Background
The successful candidate will ideally have strong technical knowledge of Rail and/or Marine systems and equipment, which may include:
- Mechanical and electrical drive systems
- Propulsion systems
- Couplers
- Cooler groups
- Transmissions
- VSP / eVSP systems
- VITs
- ASDs and VFDs
- Diesel engines
- Waterjets
- Automation and associated marine technologies
You will also be expected to provide technical guidance to service engineers when diagnosing and resolving complex technical problems.
Candidate Requirements
- Degree, HNC/HND or relevant technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Ideally 5+ years' experience within a relevant engineering, service or maintenance environment
- Previous experience managing and leading technical service or field engineering teams
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical drive systems and associated technologies
- Previous Rail and/or Marine industry experience would be highly advantageous
- Strong understanding of engineering service, maintenance, repair and overhaul operations
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills
- Good commercial awareness, ideally including experience within service sales
- Strong customer relationship management skills
- Experience working with service management systems and IT tools
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards, regulations and HSE requirements
- Experience of international service operations would be advantageous
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop technical teams
- Full UK driving licence
- Willingness to travel throughout the UK and internationally when required
